Las Glorias, Sinaloa
Las Glorias, Sinaloa, is a small community located about a kilometer (half a mile) west of Boca del Rio along the shore line. Situated directly on the Sea of Cortez, it is primarily a resort community.
On the weekends during the tourist season, visitors stream in from all over the world. Las Glorias is a planned stop for RV caravans traveling from as far north as Alaska to points south such as Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta.
As our village becomes more well-known, population growth and tourism from American and Canadian retirees is expected. The community awaits this growth with mixed emotions. On the one hand, we know that an increase of tourism will improve the economy...which is something everyone desires. On the other hand, though, we love our sleepy little town the way it is.
Only about 13 families live in the community year-round, but the population swells to nearly 1000 people each weekend, from November to June, and to more than 100,000 during the week of semana santa (Holy Week). This is the time of year when schools have their “spring break” and families flock to the ocean for their vacations.
Mr. Moro’s Hotel and RV Park is the only year-round hotel and restaurant in the area, but during the winter and spring months the waterfront bustles with open-air restaurants, and campers dot the beach.
There is a very strong sense of community in Las Glorias. Most of the families are related either by blood or by marriage, and so are protective of each other. They are very ready, though, to welcome new residents and count them as part of the family. When there’s big job to be done, the whole neighborhood pitches in to get it done.
Our family ministers in Las Glorias through day-to-day living and interacting with people. In addition to letting our light shine by “life-style evangelism”, we also have weekly Bible studies, English and computer classes and an “open-door policy” with our house, our swimming pool and Doug’s workshop. We desire that our home would be a place where people like to come and congregate, and so frequently we have a “full-house”.
Installing an electrical pole in front of our house — definitely a group effort!
